Johannesburg - Reeva Steenkamp, the model and law graduate shot and killed by Oscar Pistorius, was statistically just one of three women killed on Valentine's Day by an intimate partner, according to a study on violence against women.

The study, published in August and co-authored by Professor Rachel Jewkes of the South African Medical Research Council, found a woman is killed by an intimate partner every eight hours in South Africa.

The report damns South Africa as having "the highest rate ever reported in research anywhere in the world".

As the world marks International Women's Day, South Africans are locked in public soul-searching over the high level of murders and rapes perpetrated against women.

That murder rate is double that in the United States, according to the report.

Emile Primavesi-Marais says... Hitler was loved by the majority of Germans, and the Austrians. People lauded Hitler while trains arrived at Auschwitz to solve the 'Jewish Problem'. The majority is not always right, or ethical for that matter. Democracy has its flaws too, like any system of governance. Zuma is definitely no Hitler. The ANC is no NAZI party nor are the Zulus or South Africans for that matter the German people. Culturally we are very different. President Zuma is a populist. He isn't even a demagogue. Populist tend to be, well popular with the masses. And Pres. Zuma is after all a very successful politician so will ensure his bread stays buttered. My point is, Jacob Zuma is just as much the 'fall guy' here for a lot of commentators for all the political scandals and social ills effecting South Africa. Many problems existed decades before this man took office. Personally, all I witness in regards to Nkandlagate, Guptagate, Marikana, racism, crime, violence et cetera are the symptoms of a society which still has not learned the value of accountability for its actions nor the moral responsibility of each citizen to ensure the welfare of all people residing in this Republic. There is a serious lack of accountability here by many people. Not just the President. Read the article...
