Johannesburg – Three men were arrested early on Wednesday after a robbery, rape and murder spree, Western Cape police said.
Warrant Officer Odwa Makapula said four men broke into a house in Langa shortly after midnight and attacked the man and woman sleeping inside.
"The suspects forcefully removed the male to another room, while two of them raped the female victim and took her cellphone, clothing and an axe," he said. They fled.
An hour-and-a-half later, a member of the public called the police on hearing a woman's screams in an open field.
When the police arrived, the three men fled. Police gave chase and arrested them in Church street.
On their return to the field, the police found the bodies of a man and woman, some distance apart. The man's shoes were missing.
Both had multiple wounds to their heads caused by an axe which was found nearby, as were the man's cellphone and his car, a silver Nissan Sentra. The man's shoes were found inside.
The three men were taken to the police station, where they were seen and identified by the woman from the earlier incident, who was reporting the crime.
They still had her clothes and cellphone.
