Durban - Three men were arrested following the murder of a Tongaat couple and the attempted murder of their son a week ago, KwaZulu-Natal police said on Thursday.

"A 26-year-old man was arrested in Burbreeze, Tongaat on Wednesday morning and the other two suspects were arrested in the afternoon," Colonel Jay Naicker said.

When police arrested the 26-year-old they recovered a knife, two firearms, and his blood-stained clothing.

"Prominent businessman Balaram Reddy, 56, and his wife Maliga Reddy, 52, were shot dead while asleep in bed [last] Thursday morning," Colonel Jay Naicker said.

Their son Nivashin Reddy, 27, was shot in the lower back and stabbed several times when he tried to fight the attackers off.

"It is alleged that Balaram, Maliga and Nivashin, were asleep in their home when three unknown armed men forced their way in through the back door and attacked them."

Other family members on the premises were not attacked. The motive for the killings was believed to be robbery.

The three men, aged between 21 and 26, would appear in the Tongaat Magistrate's Court on Friday.

John says... @Henri: I didn't know your right of passage to be a man was inciting racial divide in an already racially sensitive land congratulations on being a 'man'. I have my reasons for a pseudonym, what would you do with my real name? Come to my house and challenge me to a duel? And perhaps bring your cousin, auntie and militant uncle 'om my 'n les the leer'? How very old school of you. Grow up Henri - find out what a real man is. People generally should behave differently after leaving high school. If you think the march was only against the murderers then you're really naive. The placards were clearly blaming blacks and rallying white people against a common black enemy - why do you think it was covered in the media? . How is that different from how Malema incites his followers? As much as I find those murders sick, I find it even sicker that it is used to pit white against black. Protesting against crime, yes I get that. Taking a firm stance against violence? sure. Using the same tactics as ET? Not so much. And if you look at the irony of your comments, it's a mirror image of black ANC racists denouncing black people in the DA as political sell-outs to the whites masters. This march HAS become politicised, and it has thrown fuel on racial tension, so someone HAS to say "hey! This is not the way we should do things". And if that gets you votes then it means more people feel the same and want to tackle issues in a different manner. That brings me hope. Read the article...
