Durban – Three men were arrested for allegedly shooting a woman related to Zulu king Goodwill Zwelithini in Nongoma northern KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday morning, police said on Friday.

"While the woman was entering the school gates she was shot in the neck allegedly by three people. The suspects fled and did not attempt to hijack the woman," said Lieutenant Colonel Vincent Mdunge.

Mdunge said the woman was also a member of the Zulu royal monarch.

The royal household spokesperson Prince Mboniso Zulu said the woman was married to a cousin of the king.

He refused to comment further on the matter saying it was in the hands of the police.

The community informed the police of the incident and police began their search.

"The men were found and arrested. They will appear in the Nongoma Magistrate’s Court on Monday," said Mdunge.

They would face charges of attempted murder and being in possession of an illegal firearm.

The woman was being treated in a hospital.
