Johannesburg - Three men who used a toy gun to hijack a van and steal boxes of cigarettes were arrested on the Golden highway in Johannesburg on Wednesday, Gauteng police said.

They had earlier approached a van offloading boxes of cigarettes in the city's CBD, said Captain Bheki Thwala.

Two employees of the British American Tobacco Company told police they were confronted by a man, "who had his hands on his waist as if he were drawing out a firearm", he said.

The two were forced into the back of the van and were driven about 100 metres to a silver grey BMW with two occupants.

"All three suspects off-loaded the boxes of cigarettes estimated [at]... R60 000 into their BMW," said Thwala. A cellphone and R200 cash was also taken from the men.

The robbers sped off in the BMW and police were alerted.

The vehicle was seen on the Golden highway and the three were arrested. Police searched the vehicle and found a toy gun.

Thwala said the three were thought to have stopped in Orange Farm and offloaded the boxes at a house.
