Mthatha - A massive manhunt has been launched for an armed gang who raided the Mqanduli Police Station in the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape on Thursday morning, killing three people and making off with weapons and ammunition.
This is the third attack on the police station in four years, Superintendent Nondumiso Jafta said.
An off-duty policeman, a post office security guard and a truck driver sleeping in his truck outside the charge office were killed in the attack.
A police vehicle rushing from Mthatha to Mqanduli to investigate the incident also came under fire on the national road between Mqanduli and Mthatha. There were no injuries.
A number of firearms, ammunition and bullet proof vests were stolen, although Jafta said it was impossible at this stage to say how weapons were stolen as an audit was in progress.
