Johannesburg - A seven vehicle pile-up on the N3 about 20km from Pinetown, in KwaZulu-Natal, on Tuesday left four people critically injured and nine seriously hurt.

"There was an accident involving three heavy goods trucks, two bakkies and two cars on the N3," Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

He said one of the bakkies had been stuck underneath a heavy goods truck near Hammersdale.

It took about two hours, using heavy duty cranes and the Jaws-of-Life, to free the occupants.

One of the injured had to be airlifted to hospital by a Red Cross helicopter.

ER24 spokesperson Derrick Banks said that while emergency staff cleared the highway, only one lane was open.

The accident scene had been cleared by Tuesday afternoon.
