Johannesburg - Three people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Cleveland policeman Sergeant Maqhawe Mbambo who had intervened in a robbery in the area last week, Johannesburg police said on Tuesday.
The first person was arrested on Thursday, after the shooting, in the nearby Denver squatter camp; the second was arrested after an armed robbery at the Africa Cash and Carry in Crown mines on Saturday and the third was arrested in Malvern, also in the Cleveland area, after police received a tip off over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Captain Cheryl Engelbrecht said they would appear in court soon and police hoped to apprehend more people in connection with Mbambo's murder.
Their charges would include armed robbery and the murder of a policeman.
He and a colleague from the Cleveland crime prevention unit had responded to an armed robbery in Denver, east of the city, when they came under fire. Mbambo died after being airlifted to hospital and his colleague, although not injured, was treated for severe shock.
The Sowetan reported at the time that Mbambo was about to go on leave to make arrangements for his engagement to his girlfriend.
