3 held for robbing cyclists

Johannesburg - Three men believed to have been behind a string of robberies of East Rand cyclists were arrested on Tuesday, Gauteng police said.

They were also charged with rape.

They were arrested at the Sethokga hostel in Tembisa, police spokesperson Lungelo Dlamini said.

In one case three men attack a woman and her brother as they cycled at a farm in Glen Marais on 14 March.

"The suspects held them up as they were crossing a bridge under the R21 highway and took them to an open veld until dark. The woman was later gang-raped before the suspects robbed them of two bicycles, an iPod and cellphone," Dlamini said.

Police recovered a bicycle, a 9mm pistol and a Blackberry cellphone when the men were arrested.

It was believed the men had sold the other stolen goods.

"The robbery was then linked to 10 other incidents where cyclists were robbed of their bicycles and other valuable items in Kempton Park, Olifantsfontein and Tembisa."

The three were expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate's Court on Wednesday, where they would face charges of rape, armed robbery, assault, possession of suspected stolen goods and the possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition.

"After the first appearance of the suspects in court, police will hold an identity parade," said Dlamini.
