3-hour delays for Velvet Sky flights

2012-02-24 07:27

Johannesburg - Velvet Sky flights were delayed by up to three hours on Friday morning, the low-cost airline said.

The 05:45 flight from Johannesburg to Cape Town, the 06:10 flight from Durban to Johannesburg and the 06:20 flight from Johannesburg to Durban were delayed, Velvet Sky said in a statement.

A business dispute caused all Velvet Sky flights on Thursday to be cancelled.

The airline said it was in a dispute with a service provider and was in the process of changing service providers, but that the process had not been concluded in time to operate.

The broad-based black economic empowerment company is based in Durban and flies between that city, Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Velvet Sky said the delays, which started on Wednesday, were caused by circumstances beyond its control.

so WHO is in control then?

  • George - 2012-02-24 07:40

      Stan - 2012-02-24 07:56

      George - 2012-02-24 09:32

  • Christopher - 2012-02-24 07:43

Makes one wonder just who is in control then? So much for BEE companies being efficient ...

      Tim - 2012-02-24 08:58

The problem with BEE is that underskilled people are thrown into the deep end. The principle will work if the people are correctly trained. We must be the only country in the world not giving jobs to university graduates but instead to people with minimal training. The results are evident in this example.

      Gideon - 2012-02-24 10:02

They've only been around since last year March, not even 1 year yet.

      En - 2012-02-24 10:08

People have been flying with them for almost a year with minimal-average complaints. When the company was doing ok, no one even knew it was a BEE company. Most people are only finding out for the 1st time now. Truth is the airline industry is ruthless. Dozens of small airlines that have nothing to do with BEE have gone under, but of course in this case people cant resist but note "BEE". Shame

      Hallo - 2012-02-24 10:17

Idiots, it may be BEE by ownership but the operational people are highly skilled of all races and are most from other airlines so think before you spew tripe.

  • Lana-May - 2012-02-24 07:45

Pathetic!!!!!!!!! Ill rather pay a thousand rand more and get the service I deserve than fly with this Mickey Mouse airline!

  • Pur - 2012-02-24 07:56

At last! Now we have an airline giving the same adrenaline-boosting, scare-you-sh1tless experience as riding in a taxi. Do they still have those machines selling life assurance at airports?

  • spartanx93 - 2012-02-24 08:03

This quality of service sounds about right for a BEE company.

  • comurray - 2012-02-24 08:11

Non payment for fuel means NO fuel thats it.

  • AntonKingsize - 2012-02-24 08:12

Took me 13 hours to get from JHB to CT yesterday with an 11 hour wait to get a flight thanks to NOTSOVELVETSKY . . . and day before i sat watching them fuel the flight 30 min late and with passangers onboard after having to negotiate to get fuel first!

  • Hugh - 2012-02-24 08:12

can someone say taxi operated mentality

      Hallo - 2012-02-24 10:19

Another idiot confusing this airline with Santaco.

  • Keelvol - 2012-02-24 08:12

i smell a rat. Its probabaly SAA or whoever who's being african.

  • Fanie - 2012-02-24 08:18

Just say you are bankrupt. Is this another failure of BEE. Is it a Pamodzi scam or Aurora debacle and all these so called black empowered companies is costing the tax payer money. WHO WANTS TO BET ME THE GOV. IS GOING TO BAIL THEM OUT.

  • stefan.vanderspuy - 2012-02-24 08:23

I wonder whether the pilots are ex-taxi drivers.

      Samantha - 2012-02-24 15:37

Ha Ha Ha Ha they must be!!

  • Thoka - 2012-02-24 08:29

I think the term BEE is being abused by idiots thinking black person can not run successful business. in my opinion blame is solely on poor decision making by the co leaving people hanging.

  • Watt - 2012-02-24 08:30

The flights from JHB to CPT was delayed it was canceld and still are.

  • Shaun - 2012-02-24 08:37

This is the beginning of the end for Velvet Sky - cant see them flying again after this and looks like it is more difficult to start up a low cost airline in South Africa today than it was many years ago

  • natalie.march - 2012-02-24 08:40

i just did a test with Kulula and Velvet Sky, and Kulula is actually cheaper, and i have never had any real problems with Kulula.

  • tumi.masemene - 2012-02-24 08:45

Why is it that most of these so-called B-BBEE companies are such a joke? The foundation of any business is its customer. It saddens me to see my people doing this badly in business. Tell me, why did you not pay SAA Technical Service? Was that money used to pay for the instalment on your Range Rover? Get with the programme.

  • Sebastian - 2012-02-24 09:03

It is astonishing how quick you all are to judge Velvet Sky just because its a BEE company. SAA frequently asks for a bail out from national government so please dont comment out of ignorance. At least this BEE company is honest and explains the problem. When Nation Wide (WHITE OWNED BUSINESS)went under, did we have similar comments? I cannot understand why the whole lot of you have to be so judgmental and racist.. Arent we suppose to help and support South African owned business to ensure its success? No no.. instead we want to fly BA.. So much for Proudly South Africa hey.. You all are pathetic and please get a life.. trolling in the comments section is not a job either ;)

      Gideon - 2012-02-24 10:08

Regardless of a company being BEE or not, with service this bad, not to mention blatantly LYING to you customers straight out, is unacceptable. This place should just close down and spare the public further drama. Joke airline!

  • Andre - 2012-02-24 09:10

WHY??? Easy!!!! The bosses first take their salary! And then what’s left, and only maybe will the aircraft take off, Eish!!! Can’t people think, flying with this cheap airlines and run by BEE, its self explainable, it was said this airline will not make it, and my word how right the people were!!!!!!!

  • Yolanda - 2012-02-24 09:48

This is realy sad cause i have had such a great experience from using Velvet. I had vowed never to use Kulula and SAA again due to their constant delays. Now VELVET. Where to now???

  • minibotes - 2012-02-24 10:25

A friend has been at Joburg airport since 4:30am, told to book in as take off is at 9am. Luggage has been booked in and they are now stuck in the waiting to board area. She says the spokesperson has no clue what is happening and there are police to keep the people under control.

  • Kabelo - 2012-02-24 10:39

En, thank you very much for saying that. How pathetic that we blame BEE for this, and then we wonder why our country is not going anywhere. Stop being so narrow minded PLS!! Are we going to blame BEE for all the wrong that happens? Get over the whole BEE thing and just deal with it already ok, it is happening whether you like or not. Funny each time we get to elections and we pull the race-card then people get offended, yet you are so quick to offend others when such things happen. Treat others as you would like to be treated and that way we as a country would be able to move on and make OUR country a better one for OUR children.

  • Irene - 2012-02-24 10:44
