3 hurt after lift cables snap

2012-07-23 15:52

Johannesburg - Three lift repairers were injured in Sunninghill in Johannesburg on Monday after the lift they were working on plunged several metres to the ground, said paramedics.

"The lift had been suspended on the third floor by ropes while the men conducted repairs, seated on the roof. The ropes appear to have given way or snapped," said Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks.

"Paramedics arrived at the scene to find that the technicians had been dragged to safety by their colleagues and had been laid near the lift doors."

Two of the men were in a critical condition while the third suffered serious injuries.

They were all transported to the Netcare Sunninghill Hospital.

The department of labour is investigating the accident.
