Volksrust - Three people were injured by protesters throwing stones in Volksrust's Vukuzakhe township, Mpumulanga police said on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Abie Khoabane said protesters from Vukuzakhe township had thrown stones on Wakkerstroom road at 23:30 on Friday night.
They attacked a car passing by with two men and a woman inside.
"They wanted to burn the vehicle but....police quickly arrived on the scene," said Khoabane.
He said police called an ambulance to take the three injured occupants of the car to hospital.
By Saturday morning, two of the injured had already been released from hospital.
No arrests have been made. The vehicle was badly damaged, said Khoabane.
Protest over mayor, municipal manager
Residents of the area have been protesting over the last week because they allege the mayor and municipal manager of the Pixley ka Seme municipality are corrupt and should be removed from power.
Protesters have been barricading roads, burning tyres and throwing stones and there has been a strong police presence in the area.
Khoabane said on Saturday morning the area was quiet.
