3 hurt in crash caused by fireworks

2012-01-01 14:42

Bloemfontein - Three people were injured when a bakkie hit a lamppost after a passenger was struck by fireworks from the roadside in Bloemfontein, paramedics said on Sunday.

Netcare 911 spokesperson Jeffrey Wicks said the bakkie was going down Pellissier Road when it passed a group of New Year's revellers on the side of the road just before midnight on Saturday.

Apparently the revellers ignited fireworks which struck one of the two passengers on the back of the bakkie. This caused the driver to lose control and hit the lamp post.

The driver was seriously injured as was the front-seat passenger, who received treatment for lacerations. The person struck by the fireworks was treated for minor burns.

Wicks said the injured were transported to hospital for treatment.

Meanwhile sixteen people were injured when a minibus overturned near Margate. Eight people were seriously injured.

In Pretoria, five people were seriously injured when two cars collided on Hans Strydom drive and Disselboom road.

In a separate accident, a man was killed and another critically injured when their car rolled on Rietspruit road in Kosmosdal.

    Ban fireworks and jail importers.

      Manny - 2012-01-01 15:42

Lock up the fireworks and ban the importers

I hate fireworks, our dogs were inside, but they were still going nuts. Even the cat was hiding! People are too irresponsible to be playing with fire, look at the boy who nearly burnt their house down with a "cricket", lighting it inside the house. One can't even count on adult supervision.

WTF! Is this article about fireworks or road accidents?

      Manny - 2012-01-01 15:42

The revelers are drunk and don't know where they are pointing these fireworks. So whether behind a wheel or at the end of a sky rocket - DONT DRINK. Whats the fun if u cant remember anything the next day, anyway?

      keith.staniford - 2012-01-01 16:12

Not only the starving masses in townships Ubhejane, The Nuwe Rich Indian community seem to revel in the "Big Bangs", without thought for their neighbours or animals in the nearby community!!!

Although this article lacks substance, I don't see any value fireworks add to celebrations.

      Wendy - 2012-01-01 15:39

      agree Tshivhombela

All the more reason to ban fireworks completely as no-one seems to be obeying the by-laws

  • Poen - 2012-01-01 16:53

I think the authorities have gone quite mad this time to give blanket approval to individuals to buy and set off fireworks as and where they wished. They were not required to be part of controlled groups for this. The indiscriminate way fireworks were used in our area - Orange Grove and surrounding areas in Johannesburg - created the impression that one lived in a war zone and pet animals, including our two Jack Russels, were terrified. The next time this type of carte blanche approval is given, those who allow this should be shot, or have some fireworks inserted in certain parts of their anatomies. Most people seem to forget that they live in civilised society when they are given the green light for this type of activity. They simply do not know how to behave...!

Regarding the article on fireworks - please could stats be made available on how many people were arreste/fined for firing off un-licenced fireworks. This was just another empty threat it seems! Transgressors got away with it again - these so-called bylaws may just as well be scrapped because they are not being upheld!

      Spotty - 2012-01-02 12:11

What does one expect from a totally incompetent government ? Maybe some fireworks should be shoved up their posteriors to help dispose of them.

Total ban on the fireworks it drove our dogs and cats mad had to lock them inside as fireworks went off around us and then one fireworks rocket shot into our garden showering us with its sparks. Total ban would be great , how many fires are started by the fireworks as well.
