Johannesburg - Three people were killed and 12 critically injured when a taxi rolled on the N1 highway near the Maraisburg off-ramp in Gauteng late Wednesday morning, Johannesburg emergency management services said.

"There were 15 people on board the taxi, including the driver," spokesman Robert Mulaudzi said.

One of the taxi's tyres apparently burst, causing it to roll.

"Of the 15, we have three confirmed dead on scene, and 12 were critically injured. They were transported to Chris Hani Baragwanath, Charlotte Maxexe, Helen Joseph, and Lesedi hospitals."

One of the 12 critically injured was airlifted to hospital.

The accident happened around 11:30. The road had since been cleared and traffic was flowing smoothly.
