Johannesburg - Three people were killed when the car they were travelling in crashed into a pylon on the N14 near Diepsloot early on Monday morning, Johannesburg metro police said.

"Just before 02:00, a white Audi A3 first collided with a tree; then an electrical pylon along the N14 East, before the R511, near Diepsloot," Chief-Supt Wayne Minnaar said.

The car made contact with live wires and caught fire.

Two bodies were initially found, but Minnaar said that a third body was found as it grew light in the morning.

One of the bodies was in the burnt-out vehicle while the other two had been thrown from the car on impact.

Traffic was still being diverted around the scene just after 06:00 because the electric cables from the pylon were still lying on the eastern carriageway, Minnaar said.
