Phalaborwa - Three people who were visiting the Kruger National Park died when their taxi overturned after its driver attempted to avoid hitting an impala.

Phalaborwa police spokesperson Constable Elvis Mongwe said the accident happened between Shingwedzi and Mopani in the Northern Section of the Kruger on Sunday afternoon.

"We are investigating a case of culpable homicide after a taxi with fifteen people overturned, killing three passengers and critically injuring four of them. It is alleged that the driver of the taxi lost control when he was trying to avoid colliding with an impala that was on the same road," said Mongwe on Monday.

Mongwe said the driver was taken in for questioning and was later released on a warning.

Kruger Park managing executive Glenn Phillips sent condolences to the families of the deceased.

"It is indeed a tragic event to lose someone, but to lose three is even more devastating. When reports of the accident were received, we immediately dispatched ambulances and medical personnel from Phalaborwa and Malamulele to assist those affected," said Phillips in a press statement.

Phillips added that they hope the affected families would be able to gain access to the results of their investigations at the appropriate time.

"We wish those who were injured a speedy recovery," he said.
