Cape Town - Two men and a woman were killed and three women injured when a train hit their car in De Doorns near Cape Town, Western Cape police said on Tuesday.

A 3-year-old boy survived with minor injuries, Warrant Officer November Filander said.

The six adults and the child were in the car, with Eastern Cape licence plates, when it got stuck on a railway line at around 15:00 on Monday.

A passenger train travelling from Touwsriver towards Worcester hit the white Toyota Corolla and dragged it about 50 metres before coming to a halt.

The three seriously injured women were taken to Worcester hospital.

A culpable homicide case was opened.
