Bloemfontein – Three people, including two children, were killed and several others injured on Thursday afternoon when a bakkie and taxi were involved in a head-on collision on the R714, 28km outside Bethlehem in the Free State, paramedics said.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said paramedics had arrived on the scene and found the bakkie on the side of the road and the wrecked taxi in the middle of the road.

Three bodies, two of them children, were found lying in the middle of the road, he said.

By the time ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene, provincial emergency services had assessed the patients and found that they had already succumbed to their multiple injuries.

"Several other patients were found on scene, with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Some of these patients were young children returning from primary school," he said.

The injured were transported to hospital for further care. The cause of the collision was unknown.
