Durban – Five people, including three school children, were killed in a car accident in Newcastle on Tuesday morning, the KwaZulu-Natal Education Department said.

Three pupils from Ziphakamiseni High School in the Amajuba district were among the victims, MEC Peggy Nkonyeni said.

"The two learners were doing Grade 12, while the other one was doing Grade 10. The other passenger was on his way to register for admission at Amajuba TVET College."

The driver of the car was killed. A teacher from the Siphuthando High School was critically injured and admitted to the Madadeni Hospital.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased during this very difficult period and we would like to wish all those who were injured a very speedy recovery," Nkonyeni said.
