Cape Town – Three men were shot and killed while watching the Springboks game on Saturday evening at a Gugulethu tavern, police have confirmed.

The men, aged between 24 and 30, were shot dead in Cubungu Street, KTC, around 17:00, said Western Cape police spokesperson Constable Noloyiso Rwexana.

Local ward councillor Khaya Yozi said on Sunday that one of the men who died was an ANC branch leader.

While police said four men were wounded, Yozi put the figure at five.

“I was there yesterday at KTC Hospital and they are trying to deal with the pain. They will not be kept there too long. They just need the bullets removed.”

He said most were shot in the arm or leg but one man was critically wounded and taken to Groote Schuur hospital.

“There is a strong suspicion in the community that gang violence is involved.”

Yozi arrived at the scene with police after receiving a call from someone who lived in the street.

He said locals usually visited Maduna Tavern to watch soccer and other sports matches.

“They tried to remove people on the scene and secure the area. I could not go inside and see the body.”

According to his Facebook post, four men were seen getting out of a car before opening fire on those inside.

Rwexana said no arrests had been made yet.
