Port Elizabeth - A third pedestrian has died after he was hit by an ambulance between Port Alfred and Grahamstown on Wednesday.

The ambulance overtook a vehicle on the shoulder of the R67, Netwerk24 reported.

Two other pedestrians, a man and woman, were declared dead on the scene, deputy director of the Eastern Cape traffic department Charles Branwell said.

The third was taken to hospital, but died later in the day.

Gardmed Ambulance Services spokesperson Craig Schwartz told Netwerk24 that the driver was still unconscious in hospital. He had been driving for ambulances for just over a year.

He could not confirm if the ambulance was on its way to an emergency when the accident occurred.

Police spokesperson Mali Govender said the ambulance was driving from the direction of Port Alfred, from Bathurst, and as far as they could determine there hadn't been a patient on board.

She said police were investigating three cases of culpable homicide and were trying to establish whether the driver was reckless or negligent.
