Johannesburg - Three of the seven people killed in a Grahamstown car accident were Eastern Cape correctional services officials, the correctional services' department said on Tuesday.

The officials were en route to a meeting at St Albans correctional centre in Port Elizabeth, spokesperson Logan Maistry said.

The three were based in Queenstown.

Minister Sibusiso Ndebele conveyed condolences to their families and colleagues.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with them all during these difficult moments."

The seven were killed in the accident on the N2 between Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth on Tuesday morning.

Among the dead was a 2-year-old child.

Four other people sustained minor injuries and were taken to various hospitals, Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said earlier.

The cause of the accident was not known.
