Johannesburg - Three men managed to break a hole in a wall at the Primrose police station's holding cells and escape on Thursday morning, Gauteng police said.

"Their escape was discovered when police visited the cells," Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said in a statement.

"On inspection of their cell, police discovered rubble and saw a hole above the toilet. It is suspected that they used an unknown object to break the wall of the cell before they made an escape," he explained.

The three had been arrested for business robbery, housebreaking and possession of dagga respectively and were due to appear in court on Thursday.

Police were still trying to track them down on Thursday afternoon, and at the same time trying to figure out how they managed to break the wall undetected.

Dlamini also warned the public not to the confront them as they may be dangerous, but to rather contact the nearest police station.
