Johannesburg - Three robbers were shot dead and three were arrested after a shoot-out with police in Dobsonville, Soweto, in the early hours of Monday morning, the Hawks said.

"Police received a tip-off that a gang of armed men were going to rob a Cashbuild store at a shopping centre in the township," spokesperson McIntosh Polela said.

Some of the robbers shot at police and a shoot-out followed.

Three of the robbers hit during the shoot-out died on the scene.

One of the three arrested was shot in the leg and taken to a hospital, where he was under police guard, said Polela.

One of the men shot dead was facing charges of attempted murder and was out on bail.

A car and a firearm were recovered at the scene.

Polela said police were still looking for four men that managed to get away.
