30 000 land claims outstanding

Cape Town - Over 30 000 land claims were still outstanding at the end of the 2003/2004 financial year in March, according to the Commission of Restitution of Land Rights annual report.
Land Claims commissioner Tozi Gwanya said in the report 48 825 claims had been settled by the end of March 2004.
"This number comprised 6 113 rural claims and 42 712 urban claims settled. For various reasons the majority of urban claimants have opted for financial compensation," Gwanya said.
Over 810 292ha of land was transferred to restitution beneficiaries, at a total cost of R317 993
He said 30 871 land claims were still outstanding.
