Tzaneen - More than 30 000 rural villagers in Limpopo will soon have access to clean, drinking water.
The Greater Tzaneen municipality has received a donation of a world-class water treatment plant from Zenon, a leading Canadian company.
Municipal spokesperson Solly Mokhashoa said the purification plant would provide clean drinking water to local villages.
"Our people will no longer have to travel long distances in search of clean drinking water," he said.
The villages that are expected to benefit from the project are Mariveni, Mafarana, Mulati, Zanghoma, Sedan and Lefara. The Zenon water purification plant was delivered in Letsitele last week.
The Canadian company will be sending a delegation to install it and train locals how to operate the purification plant. The municipality will then install water pipes from Letsitele to neighbouring villages.
The Rotary Clubs of Oakville in Canada are expected to send a delegation to assist with the final implementation of the project.
The water purification plant was donated through the involvement of the Rotary Clubs of Tzaneen and Oakville.
A recent survey has revealed that of the 85 992 households in the Greater Tzaneen municipality, 43 343 or nearly half have no access to clean drinking water.
The survey was conducted by the provincial department of local government and housing and presented at the recent sitting of the National Council of Provinces.
