Durban - Thirty babies have died from diarrhoea in KwaZulu-Natal hospitals in the past two months, the Mercury reported on Wednesday.

The areas which were most affected were Inanda, Ntuzuma, uMlazi, Amoati, Mayville and uMbumbulu.

Provincial health MEC Sibongiseni Dhlomo appealed to new mothers to breastfeed and not bottle feed their infants to avoid infection.

According to the Mercury, 1 735 babies had suffered from diarrhoea in the past two months.

"The babies were all under 1, not children eating hard foods such as phuthu, curry or rice," Dhlomo was quoted as saying.

Water had been ruled out as the cause of the diarrhoea.

Dhlomo told the Mercury all babies who were bottle fed had been vaccinated against the Rotavirus, but in half of the cases Rotavirus was still found in their stools which suggested they did not respond well to the vaccination.

He said it was thought lack of hygiene in households where baby formula was prepared was the possible cause.
