30 injured in KZN accident

2012-07-29 12:04

Johannesburg - About 30 people were injured on the N3 at Pietermaritzburg, near the Midlands Liberty Mall, on Sunday morning, paramedics said.

"Indications are that vehicles were slowing for an obstruction in the road when a heavy goods truck came from the rear and slammed into four taxis," Netcare911 spokesperson Chris Botha said.

The highway would remain closed until the scene had been cleared.

Further details were not immediately available.

      wish them a speedy recovery

Ha, good one Thobe! It is the speedy that caused the accident in the first place!

Defective brakes or driver asleep. Open and shut case against the truck owner. Tragic waste of professional skill and resources.

    OMG again

This is the 4th accident in three days on that same stretch of road. On Thursday 3 accidents in one day! No-one adheres to the speed limit of 60kph for cars and 40kph for trucks on that stretch which is currently under construction. The Traffic Police just sit in there cars at the start of the road works with their blue lights flashing. They do zero actual policing. The cameras set up on are dummies and there just for effect. When that road is finished it will become a race-track even though it will have a 100kph limit. Watch this space for more accidents!

      schmee.gol - 2012-07-29 13:38

Yup at least they used to sit at the Peter Brown off-ramp in the past and that stopped the trucks from using the off-ramp lane for overtaking. Now they just sit at the top of the hill. Occasionally they trap halfway down but that doesn't sort out the speeding trucks.

Make that five accidents, you seem to miss the major one on Friday afternoon, that had all the traffic taken off at Cedara!

      martin.gee.godfrey - 2012-07-29 15:13

I must have missed that one Johan, but either way, it is criminal the amount of accidents and the total lack of correct policing on the stretch from Hilton to Ashburton.

      tw2066 - 2012-07-30 01:53

The whole traffic dept is criminal. Jude Ward case, where the cop was speeding at Cato ridge. Mind youm taxis, trucks and Town Hill, or whatever cadre apeasing name they call it now - these 3 dont mix.

The roadworks there has been going on for years and years, it's a death trap.

Yesterday on our way from King Shaka airport to Pietermaritzburg we took the offramp where the obstructions are it look quit dangerous.\r\nThis morning we left the Hotel at the mall and you could not see the obstructions in the dark

  • Brian Kidney - 2012-07-29 14:59

taxis' driver underestimate trucks and thinks they can jus jump in front of a truck and brake and they expect the truck to do the same

  • pucksonsibusiso.gumede - 2012-07-29 18:46

Hope no life will be lost due to this regrettable accident, we need more police visibility and policing which is consistent to rein in some of these negligent drivers. Imindeni yabalimele ayiduduzeke

I drive pass this construction everyday. Its terrifying, if there is a truck on the one lane, and note that there are two lanes, there is no space for a car to bypass it. It is extremely unsafe and yes you cannot see a thing in the dark, there isn't enough lighting, God help you if your lights are not working, but this is not on. Trucks fly down the N3 with speed and the cops just sit in their cars watching. It's always reactive response with these accidents, never a pro active one, it's never going to change, so all drivers, be safe!!!
