Cape Town - About 300 people were left homeless on Tuesday after fire gutted 80 shacks in Masipumelele informal settlement near Fish Hoek on the False Bay coast.
Cape Town disaster management co-ordinator Johan Minnie said the fire started about 02:45 and was put out shortly before 07:00.
Disaster management staff were still on the scene at mid-morning co-ordinating relief efforts.
Minnie said that while the cause of the fire was not known, the possibility of arson was being investigated.
The homeless were being housed in a nearby Methodist Church hall.
