Johannesburg - Thirty-two people were injured when two minibus taxis collided head-on in Bryanston on Thursday, Johannesburg emergency services said.

"Six people including one of the drivers were critically injured. Two people had to be airlifted to hospital," Johannesburg emergency services spokesperson Percy Morokane said.

Nine people were seriously injured and 17 escaped with minor injuries.

It was believed that driver error was the cause of the head-on collision.

The accident occurred on the William Nicol and Main road intersection in Bryanston at about 06:30.

Traffic remained congested after the scene was cleared at about 09:00.

Motorists were advised to use alternate routes towards Bryanston.
