Cape Town - With months to go before next year's general election, a spares shortage has left close to a third of the home affairs department's mobile offices immobile.

In a written reply to a parliamentary question on Tuesday, Home Affairs Minister Naledi Pandor said 81 offices were operational, but a total of 34 mobile offices were not functional.

The department's mobile offices operate mainly in rural areas around the country, and have proved vital in helping residents obtain identity documents - essential if they want to register as voters.

Pandor could not say when the 34 would be back on the road.

"Full functionality of the 34 mobile offices depends on the turnaround times of the service providers and the availability of spare parts where necessary. Specific time-frames can therefore not be provided," she said.
