345 children reported missing

Johannesburg - A total of 345 cases of missing children were reported to Missing Children SA (MCSA) in the last year, the organisation said on Thursday.

For the same period, between May last year and the end of April this year, 195 adults were reported missing, it said.

The police recorded about 1 460 missing persons cases annually.

Of the cases reported to MCSA in the last year, 295 children were subsequently found, a success rate of 86%. Overall, 80% of those reported to MCSA were found.

By province, Gauteng had the highest number of missing persons at 251, followed by the Western Cape at 172. Only three were reported to MCSA in the Northern Cape during the year.

Teenagers were most likely to go missing, with 190 reported missing countrywide. Eighty-three were between the ages of 7 and 12, and 72 were aged 6 and below.

No waiting period

The leading reason for children's disappearances was running away, at 26%. Almost a quarter got lost, and 8% were abducted by strangers.

Parental and family abductions accounted for 6% and 1% respectively. In 32% of cases the cause of disappearance was unknown. Three percent were found dead.

MCSA urged parents to be vigilant.

"We have seen an increase in cases reported to our organisation and a decrease in our success rate."

Contrary to popular belief, there was no waiting period before a person could be reported missing to the police.

"Should you report a person to the police station and the police officer tells you to come back after 24 hours, demand to speak to the station commander."

The name, age and physical description of the missing person would need to be recorded, as well as where they were last seen and the clothes they were wearing at the time.

On fb I get the MCSA alerts but they all seem to be from the Western Cape. Also get alerts from Pink Ladies. Share all posts because I believe that the more people who are aware of the missing individuals (both adult and children) the more likely they are to be found. Go like the missing children sa fb page and you too could share alerts and help a little.

Beware of unreliable statistics... that equates to +- 87000 under 14's missing and over a 1 000 000 murders and rapes a year. Keep it accurate and people will believe you...

I have said this before and I am saying it again, If all babies were fitted with a micro chip, and the number register on a Police State register they would more then likely be found if they were taken to a hospital or doctor for treatment and that all the hospitals government and private should have scanners this scanning can be done when the child is taken in for a check up or treatment and then the parents must prove their identity, and that of the child. Time the world woke up that the abduction of children will carry on and little ones will be murdered until something positive is done about it.
