Johannesburg - Four men have been arrested following a shootout with police officers along Grayston Drive, Sandton, on Wednesday evening.

The men had allegedly hijacked a grey Volkswagen in Randburg just after 16:00. The SAPS, JMPD as well as a SAPS helicopter were alerted and a high-speed chase led them to Sandton, near the M1 off-ramp, JMPD spokesperson Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

A shootout between the officers and the men ensued.

During the chase the men drove into oncoming traffic and crashed into two vehicles.

The drivers of the two vehicles involved in the crash were injured and taken to a nearby hospital.

Traffic was diverted from the crime scene, Minnaar said.

The four men have since been arrested and will face charges of hijacking, attempted murder, reckless and negligent driving as well as possession of an unlicensed firearm, police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubela said.
