Pretoria - Four men have been arrested for the murders of 14 men in Benoni, police said on Tuesday evening.

According to police, all the accused are from Lesotho.

Acting National Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Khomotso Phahlane said one of the four men was arrested in the country while the other three were arrested in Lesotho.

"We are at this stage in discussion with our Interpol colleagues to facilitate the extradition of those that are in Lesotho."

Unlicensed firearms were found in the possession of the three men arrested in Lesotho and are being subjected to forensic analysis, he said.

The three men were found guilty of possession of an illegal firearm by a court in Lesotho.

He said the 14 victims were believed to be illegal miners.

"We would like to encourage anyone with information on any of the matters to come forward and assist police in bringing the perpetrators to book."

A passer-by called the police after he came across six bodies in the early hours of last Sunday. Eight more bodies were discovered the next day.

Police said all the deceased had gunshot wounds to the upper body. The motive for the killings is still unknown.
