Cape Town - Projecting the pictures of Steenberg's most wanted criminals onto the walls of apartment blocks in neighbouring areas has led to four arrests in less than 24 hours, the City of Cape Town said on Friday.

"The open-air screening drew a lot of attention from residents and had the desired effect of getting residents talking," mayoral committee member for safety and security, JP Smith, said in a statement.

There was also a R1 000 reward system for information leading to a successful arrest.

"This is but one of the ways in which we're getting residents to co-operate with us and do their bit to make their communities safer," Smith said.

By the end of the operation, which took place on Thursday, four of the suspects on the list had been arrested from various locations in Lavender Hill.

"The operation also yielded seven more arrests in Steenberg and Retreat and one in Hanover Park, all for possession of drugs," he added.

Various quantities of dagga, tik, Mandrax and just over R1 000 in cash were recovered during the arrests.

Due to the success of the first operation, Smith said the "wanted" roadshow would be taken around the city.

"I am confident that the more we publicise details of the suspects, the more success we'll have in apprehending them."
