Mbombela - Three men and a woman were arrested on Saturday for fraud when they tried to steal money from an NGO's bank account, Mpumalanga police said.

The four, aged between 30 and 52, would appear in court on Monday on fraud charges, Colonel Leonard Hlathi said.

The group had been under investigation since June, Hlathi said.

The allegedly stole money from bank accounts of non-governmental organisations (NGOs), using fraudulent documents.

They targeted organisations which had R1m or more in their account.

"They were working with bank officials," Hlathi said.

One man and woman were arrested inside the bank while trying to withdraw a large amount.

"The other two were arrested outside the bank and the other two - who were in the getaway car - sped off."

More arrests were imminent, Hlathi said.
