Cape Town - Four people were killed when their car collided with a train along the Vlaeberg road near Stellenbosch on Monday, Western Cape police said.
Superintendent André Traut said two women and two men were travelling in a white hired VW Polo when a train hit their vehicle on Monday afternoon.
Three of them were aged between 52 and 55, but the age of the fourth person still had to be confirmed.
The SABC earlier quoted emergency services staff as saying that the accident was the result of the Polo driver's failure to stop for the train.
A case of culpable homicide was opened.
