Johannesburg - Four people have died and a number of others were seriously and critically injured in four separate accidents on Johannesburg roads on Sunday, ER24 said.
Spokesperson Werner Vermaak said a pedestrian had died after he was running across the Old Vereeniging Road, south of Johannesburg, and was hit by a passing bakkie.
"The pedestrian sustained severe head and chest injuries and was declared dead on scene," he said.
The man's body was flung into the middle of the highway, making it difficult for other vehicles to pass, he said.
Head-on crash
Two people were killed instantly and one was critically injured when two vehicles collided head on and a third crashed into the back of another on Hans Strijdom.
"The patient was transported to a nearby hospital in a critical, but stable condition," said Vermaak.
In another accident on Main Reef road south-west of Johannesburg, a taxi collided with a car carrying two occupants.
The driver of the car died on scene and the passenger was in a critical condition. Eight other people from the taxi were also injured.
The passengers were taken to Chris Hani-Baragwanath and Helen Joseph hospitals.
Two people were critically injured at Panorama Estates in Noordheuwel when two vehicles collided head on.
"They were stable on transportation and transported to a nearby hospital," he said.
