Queenstown - Four prisoners arrested for crimes including rape and murder have escaped from the Queenstown prison, Eastern Cape police said on Friday.

Monwabisi Roxa, Phumlani Robert Zulu, Bongani Bovu and Fundile Njokweni escaped from the prison at 21:00 on Thursday, said police spokesperson Zama Feni.

They broke a toilet window and cut through steel bars with a saw to make their escape, he said.

The four were to have appear in court between April and June in separate.

Police warned the community that they were considered dangerous and should not be confronted.
