Pretoria - Four men accused of killing former Johannesburg cluster commander Major General Thirani Maswanganyi appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate's Court on Friday.

Tshepo Mosai, 30, Roger Godfrey Moseki, 33, Ndaedzo Isaac Vele, 29 and Nditsheni Daniel Nefolovhodwe, 32, are charged with premeditated murder.

The four entered the packed courtroom before midday.

Maswanganyi's widow Shereen was in court with her daughter Tinyiko, 17, and close friend Kate Malapane.

Prosecutor Lucas Moseki said the State was ready to proceed with the four's formal bail application.

Maswanganyi was found dead in a field near Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria on 17 June. His hands and feet were bound.

A search was launched after a police patrol found his Isuzu bakkie abandoned next to the R101. A police uniform and police identification card were in the bakkie.

In a brief appearance in court on 8 July, the four men asked to be examined by doctors. They alleged that police had assaulted them after their arrest.

Lucas Moseki said if this were true, they should lay criminal charges.
