Johannesburg - Four children were killed in two separate shack fires in Johannesburg, the city's emergency service said on Tuesday morning.

One fire in Drisiek, near Orange Farm, was caused by an illegal electricity connection, spokesperson Synock Matobako said.

A 5-year-old boy and an 8-year-old girl were killed in the 03:00 blaze. Their parents were not in the shack at the time.

In another fire in Soweto on Monday night, another two boys, aged 5 and 7, were killed.

"The children became trapped and could not escape," said Matobako.

Their parents were also not in the shack at the time.
