Bloemfontein - Four people were killed when the driver of a VW Golf carrying seven people hit a tree in Bloemfontein, ER24 paramedics said on Wednesday.

The driver apparently lost control taking a corner on the N8 and hit the tree "at speed", spokesperson Andre Visser said in a statement.

There were six men and a woman, aged between 17 and 23, in the car. Rescue workers and firefighters had to cut them from the wreckage.

Three of the occupants were declared dead on the scene. A fourth died in hospital later.

The injured were taken to Pelonomi Hospital.

7 people in a VW Golf? Isn't that car small for 7 occupants? Reckless, irresponsible and unnecessary deaths...

      aarchaic - 2011-11-30 14:14

you are correct! a most passenger cars and hatchbacks ( not including 2 seaters ) are only licenced to carry 5 people MAX.

... and there is a law which states that all occupants must wear seat belts. This applies also to rear seat passengers. Since the car was overloaded, it is obvious that not all the passengers were wearing seat belts. It's very sad that these unnecessary deaths still happen.

The festive season just seems bring out the devil in many weak-minded people, including even the so-called adults. At traffic lights, one sees drivers slowly creeping forward into the road while the red light is still Red against them. I think this is a fashion of some kind. Then they race to beat the next 'red light' and often driving through when the lights are already against them - to show how 'macho' they are. Then they drink alcohol, pack like sardines into a car and drive through the streets at breath-taking speeds, just to activate their adrenalin. And then they die,or get maimed, or kill innocent people, or cause untold suffering to their families and friends, etc. Will it ever stop?

If you are going to break the law folks then be prepared to pay the price. Remember paying a fine might not be the only price you pay.
