Johannesburg - A search was under way on Monday for four lions which escaped from the Kruger National Park, local authorities said.
Five lions took advantage of a hole in their enclosure to make their escape on Saturday, Jimmy Masombuka, a spokesperson of Mpumalanga Province parks and tourism agency, told AFP.
One of the lions died after a train hit it, he said.
The remaining four are on the prowl around Mdlankomo village, where inhabitants have been warned to be on high alert and to protect their livestock at night.
"It is very tough to capture them because there are a lot of bushes in the region and the lions are very intelligent. They smell us when we approach them," Masombuka said.
