Cape Town – Four people have died after a whale watching charter boat carrying about 33 people capsized near Hout Bay, Cape Town on Saturday afternoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute said.

Of the 33 to 34 people that were on the boat, 4 people have been confirmed dead, NSRI spokesperson Craig Lambinon told News24.

Search and rescue operations were still ongoing for the last few passengers unaccounted for.

The charter boat was at Duiker Island when it capsized at about 15:00, Lambinon said.

NSRI rescuers as well as several other charter boats managed to rescue many of the people who had fallen into the sea.

Lambinon said authorities were asking the public to stay away from Hout Bay while rescue operations were ongoing.
