Johannesburg - Bystanders saved a 4-year-old boy from drowning in the Knysna lagoon, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Sunday.
On Saturday evening, NSRI volunteers responded to reports that a drowning was in progress, said volunteer Graeme Harding, who responded to the distress call.
They found the boy, unconscious and struggling for breath, lying on a towel on the beach.
He had been pulled out of the water by bystanders.
"We immediately began resuscitation efforts and the child... responded well to our efforts," he said.
He regained consciousness and his breathing became easier.
The child was transported to hospital for further treatment and for observation for secondary drowning.
The toddler may have gotten into difficulty while paddling in shallow water, said Harding.
