Bethlehem - A total of 40 people were injured when an army vehicle overturned just outside Bethlehem in the Free State on Wednesday.

The accident, which happened on the Fouriesburg Road, left several people critically injured.

A group of military skills development system members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) were returning from a trip to town when the incident happened.

"It is alleged that the accident happened shortly after the driver lost control of the SAMIL 50 personnel carrier truck before it overturned," SANDF spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga said in a statement.

"Upon assessment of the patients, it was found that they sustained injuries ranging from minor to critical," ER24 spokesperson Chitra Bodasing Harduth said in a statement.

The injured were transported to various hospitals.

The Minister of Defence Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Secretary for Defence Dr Sam Gulube, Chief of the SANDF General Solly Shoke and the Chief of the SA Army Lieutenant General Lindile Yam expressed their shock at the incident and wished the injured a speedy recovery.
