41 on the run after jail break

Johannesburg - Forty-one prisoners escaped from the Harrismith prison after a hostage situation on Monday, police said.

Harrismith police spokesperson Jeremiah Khiba said several prisoners took one of the wardens at the prison hostage in a cell while he was conducting a routine check at about 17:00.

"A prison warder was held for some time in one of the cells, before the prisoners took his keys and opened the cells, allowing prisoners to escape," he said.

None of the prisoners were rearrested by 21:00 on Monday night.

The guard sustained minor injuries.
