41 treated after factory gas leak

Cape Town - Forty-one people received medical attention after a gas leak at two factories in Bellville, Cape Town affected their breathing on Wednesday, Western Cape metro emergency medical services said.

EMS spokesperson Keri Davids said they were notified at 10.42 of a gas leak at factories on Sacks Circle Boulevard in Bellville.

They "assessed 41 staff members for headaches, shortness of breath, symptoms of a tight chest and evidence of burns".

Ten patients suffering from shortness of breath were taken to the Melomed Hospital in Bellville.

Fire and Rescue spokesperson Theo Lane said a forklift damaged a pipe transporting ammonia to refrigerators at Vector Logistics.
