Pietermaritzburg - Hundreds of police officers effected dozens of arrests in Pietermaritzburg on Friday last week during a massive operation ahead of the festive season.

Officers from the 13 stations in the uMgungundlovu North Cluster joined forces to clean the streets of crime to make this year’s festivities all the more safe.

In a 12-hour special crime prevention operation under the command of Mountain Rise’s Colonel Boxer Pillay, about 120 officers saturated their policing areas.

Stop and searches, cordon and searches, road blocks and high density blue light patrols in hot-spot areas resulted in the arrest of 45 people.

The arrests were made for attempted murder, rape, carjacking, shoplifting, drunken driving, possession of drugs, possession of housebreaking implements, dealing in liquor without a valid liquor license as well as other road traffic offences.

Police cluster commander Brigadier Francis Bantham commended all for working well as a team.

She said police will be on high alert during the holidays with many special crime prevention operations planned for the safety of the community.

“All criminals must be warned that the police are ready and eager to apprehend suspects involved in any criminal offences this festive season,” Bantham said.
