Cape Town - Four men and a woman have been arrested following the murder of a Western Cape police officer, police said on Sunday.

"Five suspects aged between 26 and 31, including a woman, were arrested in the early morning of yesterday [Saturday]," Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said.

"The five were arrested in different areas within the community of Mfuleni."

Sergeant Xolisa Mlindwa's body was found next to his car in Faure Road, Mfuleni on Monday. He had multiple gunshot wounds. Mlindwa, aged 41, was stationed at the Gugulethu police station.

During the arrests two firearms were recovered. One was Mlindwa's.

"The suspects are currently in custody and are due to appear in the Blue Downs Magistrate's Court on Monday... on charges of murder and possession of unlicensed firearms," he said.

Western Cape community safety MEC Dan Plato on Sunday welcomed the arrests.

"[It] sends a strong message to the alleged cop killers, those still at large and criminals in general: crime will not go unpunished," Plato said in a statement.

"I urge the different communities where these crimes have been committed to share information with the authorities to ensure that those responsible are brought to task," he said.

Last Sunday two police officers, Sergeant Sibongile Ngcawuzele, aged 37, and Constable Monwabisi Khaka, aged 33, were shot dead while on duty in Nyanga, Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said at the time. Their service pistols were stolen.
